Next door, the 13th-century Palazzo dei Papi – itself the former monumental home to no fewer than 33 popes – is the home for many of the city’s museums. You can find here the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo which traces the history of the cathedral’s construction and includes a Simone Martini Madonna and Saints and a Madonna and Child by Pisano. The Palazzo also houses the Museo d’Arte Moderna Emilio Greco. It displays a collection of sculpture by Emilio Greco. And in the same building is the Museo Archeologico Nazionale which showcases the best finds from the surrounding necropoli.
